Briefing sheet

A double-sided page: the problem, how it works, the regulatory structure and where the project stands. The document to leave behind after a meeting.

Official description

In one sentence — Kobri replaces the paper voucher Cameroonian shopkeepers hand out when they have no coins, with a traceable digital balance that can be spent elsewhere or withdrawn in cash.

In one paragraph — In Cameroon, a chronic coin shortage forces shopkeepers to give change in handwritten vouchers, in sweets, or not at all. Kobri digitises that change: the customer scans a QR code, types a code supplied by the shopkeeper, and their balance is credited in under five seconds. Kobri does not hold the funds: the service is operated as a distributor, under the licence of an approved financial institution, in line with COBAC Regulation R-2019/01. Kobri is a product of Africa Digital Solutions (AFRIDISOL).

Background facts

  • 385 licensed microfinance institutions in Cameroon as at 31 December 2025, carrying 659.4 billion FCFA in loans.
  • 73.7% of all CEMAC microfinance institutions are Cameroonian.
  • The shortage of 50 and 100 FCFA coins has been documented for several years; some shopkeepers buy their change.
  • COBAC Regulation R-2019/01 exempts distributors operating under the cover of an approved provider from holding their own licence, and requires that provider to notify them within one month.
